How to Choose Insulation for Light Refrigerated Van

Oct 30, 2026 Leave a message

A light refrigerated van, also known as light freezer truck, small cold chain truck, is widely converted from ISUZU light box van, and popular for fresh food, fruit, dairy and pharmaceutical delivery in Africa and the Middle East. The insulation layer is the core of the refrigerated box. Good insulation keeps stable temperature, reduces refrigeration unit power consumption and extends service life. Many buyers, especially for right hand drive refrigerated van projects, struggle to pick suitable insulation materials.https://www.hjtrailer.com/truck/box-truck/reefer-box-truck.html

Main Insulation Materials for Refrigerated Van Box

  • Polyurethane Foam (PU Foam) PU foam is the most mainstream material for refrigerated van insulation. It has low thermal conductivity, good heat preservation performance, light weight and high structural strength. It can be injected on-site or prefabricated into panels. It fits most ISUZU refrigerated van for general cold chain, such as vegetables, fruits, frozen meat. It balances cost and thermal effect, which is the first choice for most light cold chain trucks.
  • Extruded Polystyrene Board (XPS) XPS board has excellent moisture resistance and compression resistance. It is not easy to absorb water. It is suitable for humid coastal areas and high-humidity distribution routes. The downside is its bonding requirement. If the seal is not handled well, cold leakage will happen. It is often used for medium-temperature refrigerated delivery.
  • EPS Foam (Polystyrene Foam) EPS foam is cheap and lightweight, but its thermal insulation performance is weaker than PU. It absorbs moisture easily. It is only fit for short-distance, low-demand fresh goods transport, not recommended for long-distance or frozen goods below -18℃. It is less popular for export refrigerated vans.
  • Phenolic Foam Phenolic foam has good fire resistance. It is suitable for special pharmaceutical refrigerated vans with strict fire safety requirements. Its price is higher and it is less used in ordinary food cold chain light trucks.

Key Factors to Help You Make the Decision

✅ Transport temperature requirement For frozen goods (-18℃ ~ -25℃): PU foam is recommended. For fresh keeping (0℃ ~ 8℃): PU or XPS can work. For simple constant temperature goods: EPS can be used to cut costs.

✅ Local climate condition For hot regions such as Africa and Middle East with strong sunshine and high ambient temperature: high-density PU foam is preferred, to reduce heat penetration and lower fuel consumption of the refrigeration unit. For humid coastal areas: XPS or high-density PU with good waterproof FRP skin.

✅ Box structure & outer skin material Insulation material must match the outer panel. FRP (fiberglass) skin + PU foam is the classic combination for export refrigerated van. It is waterproof, anti-corrosion and easy to clean, perfect for overseas cold chain fleets. Steel skin is cheaper but easy to rust in rainy or salty air.

✅ Weight limit of light van chassis Light chassis like ISUZU ELF has limited payload. The insulation cannot be too heavy. High-density PU provides good insulation without adding excessive weight, so it can reserve more loading capacity for cargo.

✅ Budget and after-sale maintenance PU foam has a long service life, stable performance and low later maintenance cost. EPS needs frequent inspection because water absorption will quickly ruin insulation effect.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not choose low-density cheap foam just for lower cost; it will cause high fuel consumption and temperature out of control.
  • Ignore the sealing between insulation panels. Gaps are the main source of cold leakage.
  • Forget anti-water treatment. Once insulation absorbs water, thermal insulation performance drops sharply.

Our Suggestion for Export Market

For most Africa refrigerated van and Middle East cold chain truck based on ISUZU light box chassis, we recommend high-density injected polyurethane foam with FRP inner and outer skin. It adapts to high temperature, rough road conditions and long-distance logistics. We support custom RHD refrigerated van with different insulation thickness according to your temperature standard.
