Winter Protection Notes for Aerial Work Vehicle

Nov 06, 2026 Leave a message

Low temperature brings hidden risks to truck-mounted aerial work vehicles. Proper winter protection and maintenance keep stable performance and extend the service life of hydraulic components, which is often overlooked by municipal and construction teams operating in cold or high-altitude regions. When the temperature drops, hydraulic oil, seals, batteries and water pipes are affected. Precautionary maintenance can prevent boom stuck, hard starting and frozen pipe rupture, supporting street light maintenance, exterior repair and pipeline high-altitude projects smoothly.https://www.hjtrailer.com/construction-machinery/truck-mounted-crane/telescopic-boom-aerial-lift.html

Use anti-freeze hydraulic oil with proper low-temperature grade. Inspect hydraulic pipelines, connectors and cylinder seals regularly. Rubber seals tend to harden and leak in cold weather, replace leaking parts promptly. Never run full-load lifting immediately after startup. Do several low-speed boom cycles to warm up the hydraulic system, and start formal work after oil pressure stabilizes, to reduce wear on pumps and valves.

Battery failure is common in winter. Cold weather reduces battery capacity. Park the vehicle in a sheltered area after work, test battery voltage regularly and add battery insulation cover if needed. Disconnect the negative terminal for long-term parking to avoid power loss. Also check the antifreeze level and freezing point to protect the engine block from frost crack.

Add extra pre-operation checks in cold seasons: check outriggers and slewing bearings for jamming caused by low temperature, remove snow and ice on working basket and outriggers. Ice on anti-slip floor may cause operator slipping. Reduce high-altitude operations in icy or snowy weather. If work is necessary, cut down rated load and slow down luffing and slewing speed, watch out for abnormal noise and vibration.

Our exported XCMG straight boom aerial work platforms support optional low-temperature kits according to local climate. Following standard winter maintenance greatly cuts downtime and helps construction contractors run high-altitude projects reliably.
