Temperature Setting for Fresh & Frozen Reefer Truck

Oct 21, 2026 Leave a message

Temperature control is critical for reefer truck cold chain transport. Many overseas buyers mix up the temperature ranges for fresh chilled goods and frozen cargo. Improper temperature settings lead to fruit chilling injury, meat spoilage and costly cargo loss. Below are standard temperature settings, operating tips and common mistakes for reefer trucks exported to Africa and the Middle East.https://www.hjtrailer.com/truck/box-truck/refrigerated-box-truck.html

1. Fresh Chilled Cargo (0℃ ~ +8℃, Chill Mode)

Applicable goods: fresh fruits & vegetables, flowers, dairy, fresh pork, fresh fish, eggs

  • General setting: +2℃ ~ +5℃
  • Tropical fruits (banana, mango, papaya): +10℃ ~ +13℃ (low temperature will cause black chilling damage)
  • Leafy vegetables, strawberry, grape: 0℃ ~ +2℃

✅ Key rule: Do NOT let cargo freeze. Temperature below 0℃ destroys plant cells and accelerates rot.

✅ Widely used for local market delivery and fresh produce wholesale in Africa.

2. Frozen Cargo (≤ -18℃, Freeze Mode)

Applicable goods: frozen meat, frozen seafood, quick-frozen food, ice cream

Global standard setting: -18℃ For long-distance transit, sea shipment or hot desert routes in Middle East: set -20℃ ~ -22℃ to create buffer against temperature rise

✅ Key rule: Frozen cargo must stay fully frozen. High ambient heat, bumpy roads and frequent door opening cause temperature spikes, so extra cold buffer is necessary.

3. Special temperature-sensitive cargo

Vaccines & biological samples: +2℃ ~ +8℃, medical cold chain, temperature recorder is mandatory. Potato, onion: +5℃ ~ +10℃, no ultra-low cooling required.

4. Practical operation guidance for overseas fleets

  • Pre-cool the insulated box BEFORE loading. Never load warm cargo and then turn on the cooling unit.
  • Keep air channels clear. Leave gaps between cargo, walls and ceiling for cold air circulation. Blocked airflow creates hot spots inside the box.
  • Minimize door opening time during loading and unloading. Hot incoming air overloads the refrigeration unit.
  • For hot climate regions: ambient temperature often hits above 40℃ in West Africa and Middle East. Choose a cooling unit with enough cooling capacity. Small refrigerators cannot sustain frozen temperature.
  • RHD reefer trucks share the same temperature control logic as LHD models; only the steering layout is different.

Quick Reference Summary

  • Fresh produce: 0~8℃, chill mode
  • Frozen meat & seafood: -18℃ or lower, freeze mode
  • Tropical fruits: 10~13℃ to avoid chilling injury
