Refrigerated Box Material Comparison for Reefer Truck

Oct 21, 2026 Leave a message

The insulated box is the heart of a reefer truck. Box panel material directly impacts thermal retention, curb weight, service life and total cost. Four mainstream materials are widely used for reefer trucks exported to Africa and the Middle East: FRP PU panel, aluminum PU panel, stainless steel panel and PP honeycomb panel.https://www.hjtrailer.com/truck/box-truck/refrigerated-box-truck.html

FRP PU Panel (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic + Polyurethane Core) This is the most popular option for export cold chain trucks. FRP skin is waterproof and anti-corrosive, with high-density PU foam as insulation core.

✅ Pros: Cost-effective, smooth surface, easy cleaning, moderate weight, rust-free, widely available spare parts for repair. Great for fruits and vegetables, general frozen cargo.

❌ Cons: Prone to surface cracking under sharp impact; UV aging faster than aluminum versions under strong sunlight.

👉 Best for: Local market distribution in Africa, short-haul fresh produce, bulk export orders.

Aluminum PU Panel (Aluminum Skin + PU Core) Inner and outer skins made of aluminum alloy with polyurethane insulation.

✅ Pros: Lightweight, excellent UV resistance, anti-aging, more impact resistant than FRP. Lower dead weight means higher payload.

❌ Cons: Higher price. Dents easily upon hard impact; oxidation spots may appear in coastal salty areas.

👉 Best for: Long-distance cold chain, hot desert climate, high-value meat and seafood, widely preferred by Middle East buyers.

Stainless Steel Panel (304 Stainless Steel + PU Core) 304 stainless steel for both interior and exterior skins.

✅ Pros: Excellent corrosion & acid resistance, fully washable and sanitizable, strong impact resistance.

❌ Cons: Heavier, increases fuel consumption, highest purchase price.

👉 Best for: Meat transport, seafood, vaccines and pharmaceutical cargo requiring frequent disinfection.

PP Honeycomb Insulated Panel Lightweight composite honeycomb structure with insulation core.

✅ Pros: Ultra-light, flexible, hard to crack.

❌ Cons: Poor load-bearing capacity, limited spare parts overseas for repair.

👉 Best for: Light-duty 4x2 reefer trucks and small-quantity urban delivery.

Quick Guide for Overseas Buyers

  • Budget & general fresh produce: FRP PU box
  • Light payload, long haul, hot sunny regions: Aluminum PU box
  • Frequent washing, meat or medical cold chain: 304 stainless steel box
  • Light-duty city short delivery: PP honeycomb box

Note: Thermal performance depends not only on skin material. PU foam density, rubber sealing gaskets and thermal break door frames are equally important. Many cheap boxes fail temperature keeping due to low-density foam and poor sealing craftsmanship. For RHD reefer truck export, we can match the most suitable box material and refrigeration unit based on local climate and cargo type.
